Ok, lets start off with the facts, yes both of these bands (Brotherhood Of Man and Bucks Fizz) peaked many years ago and are no longer in the limelight anymore, although there are still the occasional tabloid rumours about the original line-up of Bucks Fizz reuniting. Luckily Brotherhood Of Man have had the same members since time began.
Brotherhood of Man were first on stage for this double headliner, and they got things off to a flying start by kicking off with the golden oldie ‘Love Grows’ originally by Edison Lighthouse way back all of those years ago. The cover versions of numerous other classic hits from the 70’s were played like ‘Tie a Yellow Ribbon’ and Chuck Berrys ‘My Ding- a-Ling’.
The band members didn’t take themselves too seriously and often made jokes about how old they were becoming. However despite the occasional joke and friendly banter with the audience, Brotherhood of Man still have great vocal harmonies and could quite easily put a lot of current bands to shame. Nicky and Sandra Stevens (vocalists) managed to hold the audiences attention throughout with their stunningly note perfect voices.
As well as doing numerous cover versions from the 70’s, they also included some of their own big hits. It’s sometimes easy to forget that this group had number one hits themselves throughout the 70’s which were spread throughout the set. ‘Figaro’ and ‘Angelo’ managed to get the crowd up from their chairs and start to clap and sway along to the music.
Naturally their biggest hit, which also won the Eurovision song contest way back in 1976. ‘Save Your Kisses For Me’ put a smile on everybody’s face at the concert hall, the fans enjoyed it so much that they were chanting for it to be played again, however due to time obligations the band couldn’t, so they waved goodbye and went off into the night safe in the knowledge that they had done a sterling performance.
Then the stage was set for Bucks Fizz, that’s right two Eurovision song contest winners on the same bill. Again this bands fame peaked long ago, and with it not being the original line up there were questions in the back of my mind wondering if they could be remotely as good as the original line up.
Thankfully the latest line-up are more than capable of putting on a superb show. Ok, so the songs admittedly are pure 80’s nostalgia, but hey it’s ok sometimes to delve back into that era.
Bucks Fizz did numerous cover versions ranging from Starships ‘We Built This City’ to Meat Loafs ‘Dead Ringer For Love’ and numerous other groups like Abba and Diana Ross. Again the vocals were faultless, the set was vibrant, colourful and even the choreography was verging on being straight from an 80’s stage show.
It goes without saying that Bucks Fizz included all of their big hits. ‘The Camera Never Lies’ and ‘Land Of Make Believe’ still whip the crowd up into a frenzy even after all those years.
After a quick costume change it was time for their biggest hit ‘Making Your Mind Up’ with the trademark removing of the female vocalists skirts.
The fans were more than happy as they filtered out of the concert hall, and I dare say that some people will always have a negative view of bands like Brotherhood of Man and Bucks Fizz because their careers peaked a long time ago.
However after tonight’s performances it is easy to see why they are still able to tour, without a shadow of a doubt they know how to put on a good show. If a band are able to take your mind away from the dullness of everyday life for just a couple of hours and put a smile on your face then in my book they are worthy of going to see.
I can guarantee that both Bucks Fizz and Brotherhood Of Man will certainly put a smile on your face with their performances.
Would I sit through these bands again? Hell yeah!!!!! |
