Atomic Kitten

Birmingham
Reviewed by Luke Seagrave

There is no denying that Atomic Kitten are one of the most successful girl bands since The Spice Girls. Their albums seem to get to the top of the charts effortlessly and it is only fair to say that on cd they record great melodic pop songs. Now generally as a rule, pop bands have trouble making the grade live- sure they always put on a fantastic show- but most pop bands have trouble singing- and so quite often end up miming, they then use the classic excuse ‘well our dance routines make it too difficult to sing live as well’.

From where I was seated it looked like the Kittens were singing live- ok there were times when they slightly missed the notes but hey they have earned my respect for at least attempting to sing live. They opened the set with ‘Be With You’, although there seemed to be a little bit of irony in the line ‘I really want tonight to last forever’ considering they are rumoured to be ‘taking a 12 month break’.

This was their ‘Greatest Hits Tour’, and surprisingly enough they are releasing a ‘Greatest Hits’ compilation in March. The stage show itself was colourful, bright, visually stimulating and thoroughly enjoyable to watch. And the fact that you got to see three sexy ladies gyrating around was just an added bonus. The show did contain some quite raunchy dance routines and some parents might have found that offensive considering that very young children were watching the show.

They whizzed through all the hits that had made them so successful including ‘Right Now’, ‘It’s O.k.’, ‘Ladies Night’, and they even included some of their slower material including their version of ‘Eternal Flame’. The set was brought to a close with ‘Whole Again’, which managed to get the entire audience singing and swaying along. They then waved goodbye and left the stage.

However the crowd were not going to let the Kittens of that easily and shouted for an encore- eventually the trio came back to do one last song- ‘The Tide Is High’, which left their fans feeling like they had got their moneys worth.

A thoroughly enjoyable night out, if you like being entertained then these Kittens will easily make it a night to remember- just a pity that fans will have to wait at least a year before seeing them again.
