Adem- Home Songs

Reviewed by Luke Seagrave

This is exactly what the cd title suggests- it is an album, which has been produced in Adem Ilhan’s bedroom, hence the title. It has been recorded with the most basic of musical instruments consisting of an acoustic guitar, a mouth organ, and a xylophone, which doesn’t sound like the worlds most interesting album. However the simplicity makes this album so effective.

All of the songs are structured round Adems amazing voice and his well-oiled strumming on the acoustic guitar. This works quite well for Adem, although at times you feel frustrated at the slow pace of the songs and just wish he would pick the tempo up just slightly.

The opening track ‘Statued’ is painfully slow, and to be honest the first time you listen to it- you probably will not like it, but it as the magical effect of slowly creeping up on you and working its way slowly into the deepest part of your brain, where it will stay and circle around until you have started to like it.

That is how it is throughout he entire album, and with the greatest respect to Adem, this is not one of those albums that will be dominating the charts or even one that you will instantly like, however it is a very well written album, and it is one of those that you can listen to over and over again- it is thoroughly enjoyable once you have taken the time it requires to really listen to it.
